Job description

Amsterdam - As a Senior Front-end Developer, you help bring quality journalism to millions of readers every day. You join one of the teams within our News Area and build the web platform behind our premium news and magazine brands using Next.js and TypeScript. You collaborate with experienced colleagues in a cross-functional environment where quality, ownership and continuous improvement are central. Read on to find out more!

What will you be doing?
As a Senior Front-end Developer, you build front-end solutions that enable our newsrooms to tell their stories more effectively while providing readers with a fast, accessible and reliable experience. Your technical expertise strengthens both your team and the wider engineering community, ensuring our platform remains robust, scalable and future-ready. Without your contribution, opportunities to improve platform quality, performance and developer experience would be missed. You achieve this by:

  • Designing, developing, testing, deploying and operating front-end features from idea to production following the "You build it, you run it" principle.

  • Preparing technical proposals together with the architect and making well-founded technical decisions for the modules your team develops.

  • Identifying bottlenecks, improving platform performance, scalability and reliability, and advocating for refactoring where needed.

  • Raising engineering quality by writing maintainable code, extending automated testing and helping the team determine where test automation delivers the most value.

  • Introducing new technologies and engineering practices, mentoring less experienced front-end developers, and supporting the adoption of AI-assisted development tools through pairing, mobbing and technical knowledge-sharing sessions.

About the team
Our News Area consists of 10 teams that build and operate the digital platforms for DPG Media's news brands in the Netherlands and Belgium. You will work on our white-label platform for premium brands including De Volkskrant, Trouw, Het Parool, De Morgen and HUMO.

You become part of a cross-functional feature team consisting of front-end, back-end and mobile developers, a QA engineer, a UX designer and a Product Owner. Together you deliver features that span the entire platform, from CMS integrations to the user experience readers see on screen. Beyond your own team, you collaborate closely with front-end developers across the organisation to shape the future of our web platform.

How we work
We believe in delivering meaningful impact by focusing on the work that matters most. We communicate openly, ask questions until we fully understand the challenge and provide honest, constructive feedback. Teams work autonomously within shared goals while actively sharing knowledge and expertise across the organisation.

Ownership extends from the initial idea through to production and ongoing operation. We stay involved until solutions deliver value for both readers and colleagues. Curiosity drives continuous improvement as we experiment, learn from outcomes and embrace opportunities to innovate.

What makes you the ideal candidate?
For this role, we are looking for an experienced front-end developer with a collaborative mindset. You work independently, understand the broader context behind technical challenges and enjoy helping both colleagues and the platform grow. In addition, you have:

  • Extensive experience with React, Next.js and TypeScript in large-scale, high-traffic web environments.

  • Experience with Storybook, NX monorepos, Jest, Playwright and Node.js.

  • Strong knowledge of web accessibility (WCAG).

  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot, knowing when to rely on them and when to validate their output.

  • Experience with AWS or a headless CMS is considered an advantage.

What do we offer?

You will join colleagues who think in possibilities, see opportunities and support your professional development every day.
