Enterprise data architect

Job description

Amsterdam - As Enterprise Data Architect, you are one of the key drivers behind DPG Media’s data-driven strategy. Together with the Platform Manager and Area Manager, you help define, shape, and implement the future vision for data.

About the data area

As an area, we exploit the daily reach of millions of readers and viewers on our online platforms as a competitive advantage. We support our stakeholders in five different businesses: Advertising, Marketing, Entertainment, Online Services, and our Editorial teams. We do so by working closely with data scientists and analysts throughout various teams.

We build cloud-based data pipelines, both batch and streaming, and their underlying infrastructure.

What you will be doing

You are responsible for establishing the architectural direction and maintaining an overview of what gets built by the teams in the data area and how they interface with other IT components like our media platforms, back-end services, and front-end applications. But perhaps more importantly, you help the ‘entire’ organization to become truly data-driven. You steer and influence others outside of our area towards an organizational data-mesh transformation.

You are the beacon of reason within the data area and an evangelist to the wider organization. With this transformation towards a data mesh, we have three objectives:

  1. increase the stability of our data landscape

  2. increase self-service data capabilities

  3. reduce the complexity of our data lake

How will you make a difference?

  • One day, you guide the teams in their architectural decisions. Next, you're involved in refinements of our roadmap. Even later, you are meeting your fellow architects within and outside of your area about the roadmap of the entire IT department.

  • We believe in co-development across teams. We do this by gathering all teams on a bi-weekly colocation day where we address topics hackathon-style. As the area's architect, you bring and prepare technical topics for the agenda of the colocation day.

  • You are a protagonist in harmonizing our data landscape across countries, over departments, and through acquisitions.

  • Building bridges with other teams and IT areas in the organization comes naturally to you; you are a self-starter able to sell a vision and influence others (including senior management).

  • You represent the technical concerns of the area in an assertive, diplomatic and collaborative matter.

We offer

  • An experience-based salary.

  • 36-hour workweek.

  • 12% personal choice budget (of which 8% is holiday allowance).

  • Participation in the profit sharing arrangement.

  • Personal development opportunities such as education, training and certificates.

  • Location in Amsterdam (currently we work from home).

  • Working with the latest stack.

  • Knowledge sharing from our tech colleagues.

Job requirements

Who are you

Your must-have knowledge and experience:

  • You are an excellent communicator who can talk with all layers of the organization and to large groups on stage.

  • You translate complex matters into understandable and straightforward explanations.

  • Experience in designing, analyzing, and implementing highly-available and scalable big data platforms.

  • In-depth knowledge of at least one cloud provider, preferably AWS.

  • Experience in developing in at least one of the following languages in the context of data engineering: Scala, Python, Go, Java, or Shell scripting.

  • Understanding of modern software engineering best practices like design patterns, microservices, and chaos-engineering.

  • You are an autonomous thinker and see the value in a team and enjoy working together with others.

  • You have an agile mindset and live up to the principle of “value-first”.

  • You either have an AWS certification or are willing to achieve AWS certification within 6 months (minimum AWS Certified Associate).

Nice to have knowledge:

  • You have experience in building highly automated infrastructures.

  • You define monitoring, metrics, and logging systems, and automated security controls.

  • Systematic problem-solving approach.
